ARIZONA (AZ) FINANCIAL AID:
There are two types of Arizona State Licensed cosmetology schools- accredited and unaccredited.
Accredited Institutions
Accredited institutions are authorized by the U.S. Department of Education to provide grants and loans to eligible students attending participating colleges. Financial aid in Arizona is available to students who qualify based on a federal formula. Most accredited schools will assist you in determining the amount of federal financial aid that you are eligible for. If you qualify, some of your program may be paid for with grants which provide free money that does not have to be repaid. You may also qualify for federal loans which typically have lower interest rates. The Arizona Beauty School financial services office should meet with you to answer your questions as well as help you develop a personalized financial plan for school.
Accredited institutions also have to meet certain minimum accrediting standards such as student success, job placement, graduation rates, teaching methods utilized, facilities, institution financial ratios, and Arizona State Board of Cosmetology pass/fail rates.
Unaccredited Institutions
Unaccredited institutions have not met the higher standards required by the U.S. Department of Education and are not authorized to provide federal grants and loans.
If you attend an unaccredited beauty school, you will not be eligible for federal grants which provide free money that does not have to be repaid. Sometimes the grants can amount to a significant amount of free money to assist you in paying for your program expenses.
BEWARE that some unaccredited schools will set you up with loans from outside personal finance companies such as Sallie Mae and others that can have extremely high interest rates. Your interest rates would be set by the personal finance company and are based on credit history and also may require a cosigner. Be careful to get all of the details because some of the interest rates can be extremely high and cost you a significant amount of interest over the term of the loan.
